Panaji: Public spaces and buildings in the state capital have been made accessibility friendly for the convenience of delegates attending the International Purple Fest in Goa, said chief minister Pramod Sawant.
Panaji resonated with profound messages of inclusivity and empowerment as Sawant inaugurated the prestigious festival on Monday, emphasising the need to view individuals with disabilities not as “disabled”, but as “special”.
“An inclusive India is our shared aspiration, where everyone is valued and included,” said Sawant, echoing the call for a skillful, healthy, and all-encompassing nation. He outlined the vision to establish a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India) by 2040, emphasising the collective responsibility to enhance skills, promote fitness, and ensure inclusivity for all, especially those with disabilities.
He stressed on the need to promote the festival with the aim to position Goa not just as a tourist hub, but also as an epitome of inclusivity and celebration of abilities. He lauded the active participation from across India and globally, acknowledging the impact of last year’s recommendations from persons with disabilities, instrumental in shaping this year’s festival.
Social welfare minister Subhash Phal Dessai stressed on the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, promising a new legislation. He pledged to foster self-sustainability among individuals with disabilities and announced initiatives to educate school students about disability rights through film screenings, aiming to dispel societal taboos.
“The International Purple Fest marks not only a celebration of abilities, but also serves as a platform advocating inclusivity, empowerment, and the collective endeavour to build a more embracing and supportive society for all,” Phal Dessai said.
Furthermore, efforts to address grievances and ensure access to amenities were highlighted, with Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco spearheading aid initiatives for 400 patients from Goa.
