Rajkot: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has booked Una police station police inspector N K Goswami, assistant sub-inspector Nilesh Chaganbhai and middleman Nilesh Tadvi for accepting bribe from tourists coming from Diu to Gujarat at a check-post in Una.
ACB deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Junagadh has registered a complaint, stating that based on specific information they had set up a trap at Mandvi Ghoghla check-post on December 30 for the policemen. However, when the policemen saw the ACB team, they ran away.
The ACB team managed to nab Tadvi. In Tadvi’s mobile phone, the agency found the call records of Goswami and other police personnel deputed at the check-post. In the audio, Goswami was allegedly heard instructing the other police personnel to deposit the ‘collected’ amount.
According to sources, bribe was collected in cash from tourists returning from Diu, forcing them to withdraw money at an ATM. The police personnel also allegedly used mobile apps to accept bribe in digital mode. Tadvi had been asked by Goswami to keep an eye on the staff at the check-post and report to him the number of vehicles intercepted and the number of vehicles from which bribe was collected. He was also assigned the duty to see that no tourist recorded video or audio of bribe payment at the check-post. Tadvi was paid Rs 20,000 a month for this job.
ACB alleged that tourists were forced to pay bribe as police personnel scared them with stringent action if they were carrying alcohol or not carrying some vehicle document. Tadvi had saved Goswami’s mobile number as that of ‘Guruji.’ The ACB has summoned Goswami to collect his voice sample for voice spectrography test.
