Noida: Sunlight in some parts of Dehi-NCR brought relief on Sunday as the maximum temperature increased across the region and a strong wind at 3km above the surface lifted the fog. The minimum temperature, however, marginally decreased.
Weather scientists said an approaching western disturbance might check the cold over the next two days and bring rain on January 9, i.e., Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to shallow fog in the region on Monday morning.
Noida logged 7.8 degrees Celsius minimum temperature on Sunday compared to 9.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday, but the maximum temperature reached 16.7 degrees Celsius from 14.6 degrees Celsius a day ago.
In Ghaziabad, the minimum temperature fell to 8 degrees Celsius on Sunday from 9.4 degrees on Saturday, but the maximum temperature rose to 15.5 degrees Celsius from 13.7 degrees Celsius a day ago.
In Delhi, the maximum temperature was 18.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday against 15.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The minimum was 8.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal and against 8.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
“No cold-day condition was observed in any part. The weather changed as the uplifted layer of fog dissolved from Uttar Pradesh, south Haryana adjoining Delhi and all these regions have seen a rise in daytime temperature. The fog has dissolved because of a strong wind at 3 km above the surface, though some areas including Punjab are still under fog,” Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist at the IMD, said.
The air quality marginally deteriorated in Noida on Sunday but remained in the ‘poor’ category. The city recorded 290 AQI against 260 on Saturday. However, the air quality in Greater Noida turned ‘very poor’ as the city logged 316 AQI against 296 a day ago. Similarly, Ghaziabad registered 306 AQI against 242 on Saturday. The air quality in Delhi remained ‘very poor’ with the AQI at 333, against 320 a day earlier.
A bulletin from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) said the air quality might remain ‘very poor’ on Monday.

Delhi sees moderate fog, minimum temperature settles at 8.9 degrees Celsius
Delhi experienced moderate fog with a minimum temperature of 8.9 degrees Celsius, settling two notches above the seasonal average. The visibility at Safdarjung and Palam weather stations was recorded at 500 meters at 5:30 am. By 8:30 am, the relative humidity reached 100 percent. Train services faced disruptions with 14 Delhi-bound trains experiencing delays. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 315 at 9 am, categorizing it as ‘very poor.
Average maximum temperature in December was 2 degrees Celsius higher than normal
In December this year, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures in New Delhi were above normal. However, there was a rainfall deficit of 100% for the month. The lack of strong western disturbances resulted in only light snowfall and drizzles in the region. The absence of cloudiness and the presence of winds led to higher day temperatures and less of a dip in the minimum temperature. On the last day of the year, the day temperature in Safdarjung dropped to the lowest of the season.
Delhi leads top south Asian cities in night temperature rise with a 2 degrees Celsius spike in last 23 years
A recent study reveals that Surat and Ahmedabad have experienced a significant increase in night temperatures, attributed to the surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect. Ahmedabad recorded a rise of 1.9 degrees Celsius and has the second highest SUHI value among major Indian cities. The rise in temperatures in these cities has implications for public health, including heat-related ailments and increased energy bills. The study recommends measures such as improved urban planning and passive cooling techniques to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures.
