I recently took part in a bedroom makeover project with Hillary’s. Everyone that took part was tasked with giving a makeover to one bedroom in their house We were each given specialist tips from interior stylist Joanna Thornhill and we all had a budget of £100.

I chose to makeover our master bedroom as we had just dumped our bed and wardrobes in it when we moved in and that was about it. The room was completely soulless and in dire need of some decorating. We’d recently bought a brand new home and completely underestimated how much money needed to be spent to make it look half decent. With a brand new home you’re essentially moving into an empty shell without fixtures of fittings, unless you buy the upgrades of course.

So this was the before:

Having my thrifty head on I wanted to change as much as I possibly could but still sticking to the £100 budget. I spent ages searching around for the best deals. I was aiming for a boho/boutique type style. Do you think I’ve achieved it?

Here is a breakdown of my costs…

  • Headboard £25 (second hand on Gumtree)
  • Bedside Tables £10 (second hand on Gumtree) We upcycled them with some chalk paint that we had in the garage
  • Bedside Mirrors £10 each from Dunelm Mill
  • Bedside Lamps £17.99 each from The Range
  • Brown Bed Valance £8.00 on Ebay
  • The bed throw and cushion we already had in the cupboard which I bought with a birthday TKMaxx voucher a while ago.

Total Cost = £98.98

The final results of all of the other makeovers can be seen on  Hillary’s website. There are 20 makeover projects in total and well worth a look.

What’s next for our bedroom?

After tackling the decorating, I realised our bedroom makeover wouldn’t be complete without upgrading the bed itself. A bed is the focal point of any bedroom, and I’ve had my eye on a Simba bed for a while now. A few of my friends have recently bought beds from their and highly recommend them, so they’ve been on my radar for a while now.

I particularly like the Ottoman bed from Simba. It not only looks good but also has the added storage which is a must for us, ideal for keeping spare bedding and other bits of stuff I don’t want on display in the room. Adding one of these beds to the room would not only complete the transformation but also give us a bedroom that’s as functional as it is beautiful. Watch this space for the next upgrade!

Switching to a Non-Toxic Mattress

As part of my ongoing mission to create a healthier and more sustainable living space, my next goal is to switch to a non-toxic mattress. Most conventional mattresses are made with synthetic materials and chemical flame retardants that can off-gas harmful toxins into the air over time. This can affect indoor air quality and even impact your health, particularly for those with sensitivities or allergies.

A non-toxic mattress, made with organic and natural materials, provides a safer and more eco-friendly alternative. These mattresses are free from harmful chemicals and are often made using sustainable practices, aligning perfectly with a low-impact lifestyle. Switching to a non-toxic mattress isn’t just about health; it’s also an investment in better sleep and long-term comfort. With so many natural options available today, it’s easier than ever to find a mattress that supports your body and your values.
