JAIPUR: The state police have registered a case against nearly 150 protesters under the Rajasthan Honour of Dead Body Act in Bhilwara. The action was taken after they protested while keeping the body of a woman, who was killed in a road accident at the Subhash Nagar police station area.
After the assembly passed the law last year, this is for the second time in Bhilwara that a case has been registered under this Act.First FIR under the law the filed in the district when over 200 protesters staged a demonstration with the body of 45-year-old Balram Gosai, who was fatally hit on September 12 last year.
SP Shyam Singh said that a 60-year-old Nandu Devi died after being struck by a minibus near Love Garden on Sunday. The crowd that gathered at the scene blocked the road. Due to the substantial crowd, city control was informed, leading to additional police reinforcements being summoned.
Subsequently, a case under was filed against approximately 150 protestors for blocking the road with a dead body, causing public obstruction, and violating the Act.
An official said, “After being registered, the investigation is underway, and the accused are being identified based on the videography and photography conducted at the scene.” Under the act, a penalty of up to five years imprisonment, was enacted in August last year to prevent protests involving bodies and to safeguard the right to last rites.
