Rajkot: A retired class-1 officer has been sent to jail by a Rajkot court on Thursday after he was convicted for taking bribe of Rs 30,000 in 2007. The court also imposed a penalty of the same amount, while rejecting the testimony of his wife that her husband was ‘bribed forcefully’.
The additional district judge B B Jadav convicted Mohanlal Sitaram Kosta (64), the then director of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

₹30k bribe in 2007, man sent to jail now

According to case details, in 2007 the complainant sold his Rajkot’s industrial unit to a party in Morbi. As per rule, Kosta was required to transfer the licence to the buyer and register the machinery on the name of buyer. The complainant had moved an application before the accused to change the name in licence. Kosta had then demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 to change the name in the licence.
A complaint was filed with the anti corruption bureau (ACB) to trap Kosta red handed accepting bribe. During the trial, the accused argued that he did not demand bribe. The complainant had forcefully put Rs 30,000 in his pocket to trap him, and to prove his point Kosta also deposed his wife before the court.
The district government pleader S K Vora argued, “The defence of the accused is ridiculous and immature. If anybody tries to bribe any government officer he should be booked. But the accused did not file any complaint of forceful bribery against the complainant. The senior officer of the accused, who gave approval to file charge sheet, did not take any favours of the accused during his deposition.”
