Guwahati: After nine years of government restrictions, preparations are in full swing to organize the traditional buffalo and bulbul fights during the Magh bihu, which will begin mid-January. The state government prohibited it in 2015 following the Supreme Court’s prohibition on jallikattu in Tamil Nadu in 2014.
Assam government, while allowing to organize the buffalo and bulbul fights during the Magh bihu, on December 27 issued a strict SOP in order to ensure that cruelty or deliberate torture to animals is not allowed. As per the SOP, the permission will only be given to organize the fights in those places where there is a history of organizing such events for at least 25 years.
A member of the Ahatguri Anchalik Moh-Juj and Bhogali Bihu Utsav Samiti in Morigaon district said, “We are happy to organise buffalo fights after the state cabinet’s approval. We will ensure that the SOP is thoroughly followed,” the member said.
The committee member said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to attend the buffalo fights, which will be held at the Lakshminath Bezbaruah Samannoy Kshetra.
Morigaon district commissioner Devashish Sharma said a written undertaking for complying with the rules is mandatory to obtain permission for organizing the fights.
The state cabinet has directed the veterinary department to depute teams at the spots where buffalo fights are organized to respond to any medical emergency to buffaloes, whenever necessary.
While prohibiting all human inflicted injuries, the committees have been directed to place strong barricades in the fighting area and ensure that no sharp objects are used to instigate the buffaloes.
