6 months after tender, no sign of Assonora bypass work | Goa News
Panaji: Six months after the tender was floated for the construction of the Assonora bypass worth approximately Rs 160 crore, work on the project is yet to take off, state officials said.
Fully funded by the state government for now, the bypass will be 2.9km long connecting Assonora market to Shirgao junction.
It is state highway-1 and work on the project was expected to begin after the 2023 monsoon season, but could not take off as of now.Once the work begins, it is expected to be completed in 18 months. The project is being designed as per the guidelines of Union ministry of road transport and highways.
Land acquisition for the project has already been completed. The bypass will include a major flyover and a few minor bridges as well.
A source said the existing road has reached a saturation level despite previous improvements and it cannot be improved beyond a certain limit.
Meanwhile, work is also on for construction of a bypass at Bicholim at an approximately cost of Rs 90 crore. It was expected that Bicholim residents will get relief from traffic congestion issues to end by 2025 as the two major four-lane bypass projects, worth Rs 250 crore, will be ready by then.
Work of the Bicholim bypass is on by the Goa-based contractors Assmas Constructions. This too is funded by the state.
This bypass will stretch from Bordem to Sarvan in Bicholim covering 4.6km. This state highway too will be four-lane and is expected to be completed by this year.
It is expected that all heavy vehicles travelling on the inter-state route, which are currently passing through Bicholim town, will be diverted via the bypass in the future.
This will bring relief to Bicholim residents, who presently face traffic congestion.
Both the Assonora and Bicholim bypass roads have been planned since 2013-14. The work on Bicholim bypass had begun in late 2021.
